Follow-Up Review: Evolved Travel Vibes Maui, Shots Toys 10-Speed Vibrating Egg, & Doc Johnson Black Magic 7" Ribbed Vibe

Sex toys are, for a number of reasons, tricky to evaluate and review, and sometimes one's original opinion of a toy's overall worth will change substantially with time. A vibrator that performs admirably when brand new, for example, might begin to rapidly deteriorate after several months of use, while another that was initially underwhelming might eventually come to be better appreciated due to its durability or superior battery life in the long-term.

This past winter, EdenFantasys provided me with three vibrators in exchange for an impartial review of each. In the interest of providing more accurate and complete evaluations of these toys, I have made note of their performances over the last three to six months since the original reviews were published, the details of which can be found below.

Evolved Travel Vibes Maui (Original Review)

I received Evolved's Travel Vibes Maui back in October, and at the time I found it to be a decent little vibrator, overall. Compact and convenient, the Maui is easy to wield and control, and the vibrations provided are adequate for direct stimulation to the clitoris or the g-spot, especially when the vibrator's diminutive size and single battery power source are taken in to consideration.

Evolved's Maui vibrator has seen quite a bit of use since the original review of it was published in November, and it has held up well, with no noticeable degeneration or weakening, despite having lived in the bathroom for several months. This is due in large part to the sturdy, waterproof design of the the Maui, but the construction of the small plastic case that the vibrator was packaged in undoubtedly contributes, as well. This case has shielded and protected the Maui from dust, hair, excess moisture, and the myriad of bath products that the vibrator has been exposed to while in the shower, where it has been kept for weeks at a time. The case also ensures that storage is a cinch; it keeps the vibrator upright in spite of its angled base, the two holes at the top of the case prevent moisture from being retained, and the case's compact size makes it easy to find room for it, even in a bathtub that is filled with different bottles and tubes. Additionally, the case makes the Maui well adapted to travel, fitting nicely in a purse, a glove-box, or the like.

My fondness for Evolved's Travel Vibes Maui has increased with time. It is a sturdy, reliable, compact, and easily used vibrator that is well-suited to a variety of orifices, purposes, and environments. Furthermore, in celebration of Earth Day, Evolved and EdenFantasys have pledged to donate one tree to PlantaBillion.org for every Evolved product sold, and, as Evolved brand sex toys are currently 25% off at EdenFantasys, you can get your own Maui for $14.99.

Shots Toys 10-Speed Vibrating Egg (Original Review)

I was not particularly impressed by Shots Toys' 10-Speed Vibrating Egg when I first received it. The vibrations are weak and inconsistently distributed, which renders it almost useless for me. The only way that I am able to orgasm with this toy is by placing it lengthwise along my clitoris with the vibrating component (the enclosed cylinder in the picture to the right) angled down, flush against my body; if the vibrating component is not pressed against my clit the vibrations are much too puny to get me off without the presence of some sort of additional stimulation. Using this toy to bring myself to orgasm via vaginal or anal use is also impossible without another source of stimulation, again due to the toy's weak and inconsistently distributed vibrations. Factor in the tedium of scrolling through multiple settings with a single push-button controller, and the result is a fairly inutile vibrator that I found to be useful only as a secondary source of stimulation or for warm-ups and teasing.

My review of the 10-Speed Vibrating Egg was published in December, and since then I have used the toy a total of two times. This is partially because of how ineffectual I found the vibrations to be, but the speed with which this toy's batteries drain also contributes to its infrequent use. The batteries that were included with this vibrator were dead upon its arrival, and the replacements, a different brand, lasted less than three weeks with regular but brief use. Once more I replaced the batteries, again with a completely different brand, and four weeks later, after one short use, these, too, were dead.

Shot Toys' 10-Speed Vibrating Egg is simply too unsatisfying for me to justify replacing the batteries with every use, and, accordingly, it has seen little action. I doubt I will be replacing the batteries yet again, and unless a friend claims this vibrator, I suspect it will end up in the trash bin before long. That being said, if light vibrations and a voracious appetite for batteries is not important or off-putting to you, the 10-Speed Vibrating Egg can currently be had, on sale, for $14.99.

Doc Johnson Black Magic 7" Ribbed Vibe (Original Review)

The versatility of Doc Johnson's Black Magic 7" Ribbed Vibe gave me plenty to extol, initially, but my excitement over this vibrator has dimmed considerably since the original review of the toy was posted in January. I still adore the design of the insertable portion of the 7" Ribbed Vibe, but the intensity of its vibrations has diminished somewhat, and new batteries do not last quite as long as they once did; one can feel them waning within minutes of use. The dial control has continued to be problematic, and I get the impression that it is becoming increasingly looser and less precise.

As stated previously, the shape of the Black Magic 7" Ribbed Vibe's shaft is great, versatile and suited for a variety of anatomies, but with the motor's continuing decrease in function, I find myself wishing that I had a better quality vibrator of a similar design, perhaps one that is comprised of a less porous material than plastic, or possibly even a non-vibrating graduated probe with similar dimensions and safer materials. Regardless, I still believe that Doc Johnson's 7" Ribbed Vibe is a worthwhile purchase for some, specifically those still trying to figure out what they want from a graduated sex toy, and I have found a use for it several times recently. Unfortunately, this vibrator is currently sold out at EdenFantasys, but keep an eye on it; the Doc Johnson's 7" Ribbed Vibe normally retails for less than $15, and it is currently on sale for $11.24.
